Myra Healy Hired to Coordinate New Project
3/25/2010
Myra Healy has been hired to coordinate the Books for Kids Early Literacy Initiative that is a partnership between Read to Grow and the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. The project’s goal is to ensure that the home environments of children residing in the United Way's 12-town region are literacy-rich, containing age-appropriate books.
The Books for Kids program helps build early literacy by providing children’s books to families, schools, health and child care centers and other organizations in need. Most of the 1,600 books the program distributed weekly are donated to the organization through book drives run by individuals, businesses and community groups.
Ms. Healy will focus on expanding the book collection base in the United Way region of Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stratford, Trumbull, Westport, Weston and Wilton. She will coordinate book drives, develop community collaborations and build awareness of literacy resources.
A Stratford resident, Ms. Healy has been an educator in Fairfield and New Haven counties for more than 20 years, serving as the director of Early Childhood Centers in Westport, New Haven and Wilton. She has a master’s degree in education from Fairfield University.
Anyone interested in organizing a book drive in a school, faith-based institution or community organization, please call Read to Grow at 203-488-6800 or visit the Books for Kids Early Literacy Initiative page at www.readtogrow.org.
