Read to Grow and the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County have come together in a Books for Kids Early Literacy Initiative to ensure that the home environments of children in the United Way's 12-town region are literacy-rich, containing age-appropriate books. This project is part of the UWCFC's Early Literacy Initiative, whose goal is to have all children reading at grade level by grade three.

It was a stormy day, but those dark clouds in the sky showed their silver linings as so many of you arrived at RJ Julia Booksellers on Friday, June 26, with arms, boxes and bags loaded with books to support Read to Grow's book drive.

Read to Grow has received a $15,000 grant from The Citizens Bank Foundation for the Books for Babies program at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. Citizens Bank has been supporting Books for Babies at L&M since 2001 when the program began at the hospital.

Over the years many of Read to Grow's patrons and major funders have expressed a keen interest in understanding child development issues that affect literacy. Recently we opened this dialogue with our patrons at a luncheon at the New Haven Lawn Club. Dr. Walter Gilliam, child psychologist and director of the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, was guest speaker and shared his views on language development and school readiness. |

Read to Grow has assumed the regional coordination for the First Book grants for the Greater Hartford community. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations or Title I schools that provide some type of literacy service to low-income households and offer multiple book distributions to each child in the program. |

By reading at home, Yalesville Elementary School students helped give the gift of literacy to others.
Yalesville Elementary School recently concluded a month-long annual school-wide reading incentive program, Care to Read, Read to Grow. Instead of reading for rewards or prizes, students read to have a book donated to Read to Grow in their honor. |
