Books for Babies Delivers at Sharon Hospital

Each of the approximately 250 babies born annually at Sharon Hospital now goes home with a new children’s book, thanks to a Books for Babies partnership between the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon, Read to Grow and Sharon Hospital. Families also receive Read to Grow's literacy guide for parents of newborns as part of this joint effort to foster children’s language and early literacy development.

Legislators Join Read to Grow and Comcast For Literacy

Just in time for the holidays, three area legislators joined representatives from Comcast and Read to Grow for a read aloud and book giveaway at the Branford Resource Center. Children gathered around State Senator Edward Meyer, State Representative Lonnie Reed and State Representative Patricia Widlitz as the legislators read to them and then helped distribute a new book to each of the Center's 95 children.

An updated policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council of Communications and Media recommends that media, particularly television, have potentially negative effects on children younger than 2 years, and recommends no media use in this age group.

Bridgeport Students Pitch In to Get Books to Kids

Several students from Bassick and Central High Schools' "buildON" groups volunteered their time last month to help get more than 1,500 books ready for distribution to children through the Hunger Outreach Network. The H.O.N., a program of the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport, is a collaborative of more than 40 agencies that provide food through food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens.

Middlesex Hospital Launches Books for Babies

Read to Grow recently launched our ninth Books for Babies hospital partnership at Middlesex Hospital, moving one step closer to our goal of giving every Connecticut newborn a good start on the path to literacy.

United Way Continues Support of Books for Kids Read at Home Initiative

RTG Partners with Middletown Reads Bookmobile

This summer, the Middletown Public Schools' courier van was transformed into a bookmobile to bring free books to children's neighborhoods, and Read to Grow is providing books to support the effort. The goal is to prevent the "summer slide" that can occur by encouraging children to read for at least 15 minutes a day during the vacation months.

Calling All Walmart Associates!

Walmart and Sam's Club Associates from throughout Connecticut will decide whether Read to Grow will receive a $100,000 grant as part of this year’s Walmart Foundation Associate Choice Program. Beginning June 18, associates can cast their vote for Read to Grow, one of five statewide nonprofits that have been selected for this year’s competition.

Community Dining Room's Book Supply Grows

Every Tuesday evening, Shoreline parents and children in need gather for family dinner and storytime at the Community Dining Room in Branford. The Dining Room has had a small children's book collection, but recently our two organizations were looking to increase the supply so that children could take books home with them. Thanks to the efforts of one enterprising young woman, and to the Courtyard by Marriott in Orange, PFP Schmitt-Sussman Enterprises Inc., and Yale Conference Services, that collection has grown.
