Reaching Young Docs
4/12/2010
David Weber is one of a dozen pediatric residents to visit Read to Grow this year to learn about our programs and early literacy through a new rotation called REACH - Resident Education in Advocacy and Community Health - that sends young docs out of the hospital and into the community.
Last year, Dr. Maryellen Flaherty-Hewitt, Section Chief of Pediatrics at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, and Dr. Shilpa Pai created the rotation for Yale Pediatric senior residents which allows residents to spend time visiting 11 community sites.
"Our pediatric clinic has had a very long and rewarding relationship with Read to Grow and when we were working on our community rotation for the residents, it made perfect sense to educate them on the importance of early literacy through a program as wonderful as Read to Grow," says Dr. Hewitt-Flaherty.
As a future practitioner, Dr. Weber says it's important for him to know that there are services such as Read to Grow available in the community that will support children's health and development. As a pediatrician, he says, "We're coming from a different perspective than teachers or librarians. A doctor can talk about a baby's growing mind and focus on the big picture, the long term, to get parents to think about their later goals and how they can help their children before they start school."
Through the REACH rotation and other in-service training opportunities Read to Grow provides, we help professionals develop ways to talk to parents about their role in building their children's early literacy skills from birth.
